It’s the last thing you want to think about.
You’re already overtired from partially sleepless nights, and then comes the added stress of the impending holiday season… Christmas is here!
Christmas with kids can be difficult enough; carting them from place to place, dealing with the “sugar highs” that they’ll often find themselves in from over indulging, and carting them back home again when they’ve crashed out early at the end of the night.
But Christmas with a newborn can take this stress to a whole other level – that’s if you let it get to you.
Below are a few tips for handling Christmas with a new born, on your own terms.
Yes, we know – that’s far easier said than done. But it is so important to try to remember.
When you’ve got a newborn, you are excused from wanting to battle the crowds just to keep your family happy with presents on Christmas Day.
When you turn up with your beautiful newborn bub, no one will judge you for deciding to take it easy on the celebrations when you’ve already got so much on your plate.
Release yourself of some of the typical Christmas “expectations” and you’ll find it’s far easier to stress less!
YOU MAKE THE RULES
You can guarantee a few things that will happen at your first Christmas with a newborn:
- Everyone will want to hold/cuddle him or her,
- You’ll be expected to travel all over the place as per usual
- You’ll have to feed – whether by breast or bottle – several times throughout the celebrations, and probably not when everyone else is eating
- Everyone will be trying to give you advice!
- You and your bub will both need a break
With regards to all of these things it’s important to remember that, while they will most likely occur, YOU are still in control of what happens.
Don’t want to pass your baby around like a pass-the-parcel? Then don’t.
Too hard to travel with bub this year? Stay at home.
Don’t want to upset bubs schedule by feeding at typical festive “feeding times”? Then don’t!
Not sure you prescribe to the advice your great Aunt or 3rd cousin is giving you about your baby? Then smile and nod, and leave it all at the door. Only you are the expert when it comes to your baby.
You or bub need a break from the chaos, noise, smells, sights? Then take one, unapologetically.
Christmas with a newborn doesn’t have to be as stressful as it sounds if you simply remember that stressing won’t make it easier for you or bub, and you are calling the shots when it comes to what you do and where you go.
Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year, from the team at Nature’s Food World!
